This fall, The VOID at Disney Springs and the Downtown Disney District will be presenting an all new hyper-reality VR experience based off the upcoming Walt Disney Animation Studios film “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (in theaters November 21). This experience will be similar to the “Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire” VR adventure currently occupying The VOID on both coasts.

“Ralph Breaks VR” will transform you to the internet universe and bring you face-to-face with beloved characters like Wreck-It Ralph and Vanellope. The Walt Disney Company will be teaming up ILMxLAB and The VOID to deliver “Ralph Breaks VR” and future unannounced VR projects.
Clark Spencer, the producer of “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” remarked “Our filmmakers and the terrific people at ILMxLAB have collaborated to bring an incredible hyper-real experience, for all ages, to The VOID.”
Vicki Dobbs Beck, the ILMxLAB Executive in Charge, commented on the future of collaborations with The VOID and The Walt Disney Company. “At ILMxLAB, we are truly excited for fans to ‘Step Inside Our Stories’ by extending our award-winning creative collaboration with The VOID across The Walt Disney Company. Together, we will soon invite guests into other beloved Disney franchises where they can explore rich worlds, engage with compelling characters, embark upon heart-pounding adventures, and indulge the senses — experiencing the magic as never before,” said Beck.
The current VR experience at The VOID, “Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire,” uses advanced 3D imagery and sound to transport guests into the Star Wars universe. Guests come face to face with popular characters, such as K2-SO from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and Darth Vader. The experience allows you to interact with your environment and collaborate with your friends/family who are coming along for the mission.
I personally experienced “Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire” in Disney Springs this past summer. As a huge Star Wars fan myself, it was surreal to feel as though I were in the Star Wars universe.
The experience begins in a briefing room where Captain Cassian Andor from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” explains your mission. In short, the mission is to sneak into Imperial Base disguised as stormtroopers and capture an important weapon from the Empire. You then move to a separate room and get suited up in VR gear, which includes a helmet with VR goggles and a backpack contraption (see picture below). Once the gear is all set, the mission officially begins and you are transported to a completely different world.

In the effort to avoid spoilers, I will not go into too much detail about what you see and do during the mission. However, I will say The VOID goes above and beyond to make this experience as realistic as possible. Every sense is stimulated during this journey, whether it’s smelling lava or touching a droid. From seeing your own hands as those of a stormtrooper to being able to fire your own blaster, this VR experience is nothing less than incredible.
My favorite aspect of the experience is the ability to interact with your friends/family throughout the mission. Through the use of microphones in each person’s helmet, everyone can collaborate and converse. It is so fun to look around and see your family as stormtroopers. We really felt as though we were in disguise to raid the imperial base.
“Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire” is an incredible experience regardless of if you are a Star Wars fan or not. But for those who are fans, “Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire” is truly a must-do experience. I truly felt as though I was no longer in the real-world, but rather living in the Star Wars universe I have always dreamed of. I have extremely high hopes that “Ralph Breaks VR” will give me the same magical experience of escaping the real-world.
There has been no word from The Walt Disney Company of exactly when “Ralph Breaks VR” will be coming to Disney Springs and the Downtown Disney District. They have also not stated if “Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire” will be leaving permanently. Judging from the high quality of “Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire”, the new “Ralph Breaks VR” should nothing less than incredible. However, I highly suggest taking a trip to Disney Springs or Downtown Disney before “Ralph Breaks VR” takes over The VOID to experience the fantastic “Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire”.
