Celebrate the holidays at the Walt Disney Family Museum!

December 4, 2018

There’s no better way to kick of the holiday season than with a trip to the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco! From now until Jan. 7 2019, enjoy the Home for the Holidays at Carolwood exhibit focused on Walt’s family and Walt’s love for trains. This exhibit is an annual holiday tradition for the museum.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is an extravagant model of the Disney family home which was located in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, on Carolwood Drive. The model features “a miniature version of Walt’s steam locomotive, the Lilly Belle, traveling around his Carolwood Pacific Fair Weather Route—a half-mile track that crisscrossed the home’s lawn and flowerbeds.” Along with the model, there will be pictures of Walt’s family and animation art on display.

On Walt Disney’s birthday (Dec. 5), the model home will be ceremoniously lit up for the first time of the season. Walt’s birthday is free admission day for the museum, so be sure to head to over on Dec. 5!

Besides the Home for the Holidays at Carolwood exhibition, the Walt Disney Family Museum has plenty of other events planned for the holiday season! At the Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men: Masters of Animation exhibition at the museum, there will be “an array of never-before-seen holiday cards that were created by many of the titular Nine Old Men” on display. In exciting news, guests will be able to see a painted vintage sled with the original “pie-eyed” version of Mickey Mouse.

In addition to these fun holiday events, the museum will be showing the film “Christmas with Walt Disney” (2009) throughout the month of December! The film was directed by Don Hahn and produced specially for the museum. The film features footage of the Disney family, stories from Diane Disney Miller about Walt Disney’s life during the holidays and portions of Walt’s television show. Before the film, enjoy a screening of the episode “Where Do Stories Come From?” from Walt’s Disneyland television show. This episode features Walt’s love of trains, complimenting the Home for the Holidays at Carolwood exhibition.

“Christmas with Walt Disney” (2009) will be showing every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday at 1 pm, and on Saturdays at 4 pm. The showings are free to the public. The Home for the Holidays at Carolwood exhibition is located in the Theater Gallery of the museum and is free to the public.
