New Mickey Mouse exhibit coming to the Walt Disney Family Museum

December 19, 2018

As the “Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men: Masters of Animation” exhibition wraps up in early January, the Walt Disney Family Museum has plans for a brand new exhibit! From May 16, 2019 through January 6, 2020, guests will be able to experience “Mickey Mouse: From Walt to the World.”

The exhibit will take guests on an in-depth journey through the lifetime of Mickey Mouse, documenting his influence on pop culture and the talented animators/artists involved in his creation. The display will include “rare and never-before-seen original sketches, character model sheets, and concept artwork, together with nostalgic merchandise, vintage photographs, and a variety of Mickey’s earliest and most recent animated short films.” Guests will view works by Disney Legends such as Ub Iwerks, Les Clark, Fred Moore, Andreas Deja, Eric Goldberg and Mark Henn.

Legendary animator and guest curator of the exhibit Andreas Deja provides some insight into the inspiration behind the exhibition: “I have been collecting and studying classic Disney animation drawings for a long time. Among them are very rare sketches of Mickey Mouse by master animators like Fred Moore, Frank Thomas, and others. Each artist applied their personal style to Mickey, not only in the way he is drawn but also in the way he moves and acts. By analyzing these beautiful drawings, I am constantly reminded of how wonderful and magical character animation can be.”

In addition to these rare works, guests will be able to view later works of art depicting Mickey Mouse. The works of artists such as Gottfried Helnwein, Damien Hirst, Wayne Thiebaud and Andy Warhol will be featured, as well as more contemporary works by Lorelay Bové, Tennessee Loveless, Eric Robison, and San Francisco-based muralist Sirron Norris. These interpretations of Mickey reflect the culture of that time, such as how “his simple, bright design echoed advertisements of the mid-century and embodied the spirit of American entertainment.”

This exhibit offers something for the whole family! The exhibition incorporates interactive elements and hands-on activities, which will be sure to entertain the young ones (and the adults too)!

A special preview with Andreas Deja will kick off the exhibition on Wednesday May 15, 2019 at 1-2 pm and 4-5 pm.
